Whats the difference between themes and subject matter in art?

Examples please

A theme is something that the entire piece focus on–a mood or subject such as “family” or “togetherness.”

Subject matter is the actual character or object focused on. Such as a the actual family in the picture. NOT their feelings or emotions… or the feel of the picture.

Does that help?

Metallica

Metallica

$10.34

Called “the Black Album” by many (due to its monochrome cover), Metallica marks the group’s entrance into the mainstream, with shorter songs, simpler song structures, and slower tempos overall.
