Practical Art Criticism

Is it worthwhile studying an arts-based qualification?
There’s always a lot of criticism of arts based university degrees (whether they’re “Mickey Mouse” subjects or more traditional ones like English or Fine Arts), they don’t seem to generate the same respect as Science graduates, and they certainly seem to increase employability a lot less than practical vocational training. There are also relatively few viable full time jobs directly related to the arts.
So what if you’re naturally more skilled at, and interested in, things like writing, film, music or painting and unskilled and uninterested in more practical subjects? Is it best to get an unskilled (and low paid) job and then continue to work at your passions as a hobby, or is formal study of the arts still worthwhile?
If it is art-based then you can incorporate something which makes it easier to get work as art is often a hard area to be successful in.
