‘Do you want to be part of my 365?”
”…What’s that?”
This is the kind of reaction I usually get when I ask someone whether they’d like to be part of my project. It seems pretty obvious to me what it is, and the title of it is a big clue, yet at the beginning, people were confused as to why I was posting a picture a day. Basically, this project consists of taking a picture every single day for a year, making sure it is taken and edited on that one day. It all started on January 1st 2011, and has taken a surprisingly large amount of time and effort.
During school it was another excuse for procrastination. During the winter months, when i’d get home and it was already dark and I still hadn’t taken my picture, I was really demotivated, yet I knew that I still had to think of something, and get right back to doing homework.
The point of this project is for me to be under pressure every single day, and to have to come up with a new idea all the time. At first, it was really a personal project, something that i’d be proud of myself for having completed, no matter how horrible the pictures were. Eventually, however, summer vacation started, and I now had all day to produce a piece of photographic art.
I have spent most of my summer running around all over the place trying to get as many people in my 365 album as possible, and I’m not going to lie, I am absolutely exhausted. Most of the time, I made a small album with pictures that didn’t make the cut to be my picture of the day, sort of as a thank you for having let me take their picture. At the same time, though, I think they are lucky to have someone take a nice picture of them, and let them have it for free.
Now that school is about to start for me, I really am afraid that the quality of pictures will decrease considerably since i’ll have much less time to work on them. I really enjoy getting positive feedback about my pictures, and when I upload a picture for that day and nobody gives any feedback, it makes me feel as if i’ve failed at providing a nice piece of art. So, this has almost become something for everyone else, even though I have learned so much in these past 231 days.
I have a long way to go, and I hope my pictures keep getting better. I look forward to autumn because of the beautiful colours that I will be able to photograph. I also look forward to christmas, because I will have 6 photos left to take.
At the end, I hope to get all of my pictures printed in a book, and hopefully I will be able to use it as a portfolio, even though I do not wish to become a professional photographer. I couldn’t stand the unstable nature of the job, and I wouldn’t want anything to get in the way of inspiration.
