Paintings Artwork

what are the paintings or pieces of artwork that everybody must know about?
from any country, since the beginning of time.
what have been the best paintings?
The paintings that everyone must know about from my point of view, which is that of an art historian are those that illustrate turning points and/or illustrate the evolution of painting. I can’t give you examples from one country but here goes.
I’d start with the medieval illuminated manuscripts because these show the craft like status of art performed by generally nameless artists during this period.
Battle of San Romano by Paolo Uccello which illustrates early perspective.
Crucifix, 1287-1288, Panel, 448 x 390 cm
Basilica di Santa Croce, Florence. by Cimabue for its attempt at a realistic depiction of the human body.
Santa Maria della Neve by Leonardo da VInci which is hailed as the first landscape in western art history.
Primavera, The Birth of Venus and Venus and Mars by Botticelli which depict a change in patronage from soley church patronage to that of the rich merchant classes such as the Medici. Also illustrates the return to classical values which the Renaissance hinged on.
The Last Supper fresco by Leonardo da Vinci for its depiction of ‘motions of the mind’.
Self potraits by Albrecht Durer which show how the artist evolved from being percieved as craftsman to intellectual. Self portrait of Catarina van Hermessen which illustrates how the female artists of this period depicted themselves and percieved their profession.
The Venus of Urbino by Titian as it stunned contemporary viewers with its naked subject’s direct gaze. Brazen even as the figure has her hands between her legs as she looks at the viewer.
The Death of the Virgin by Carravaggio which heralds a new realism which was absent in the idealised works of the Renaissance. Anything by Rembrandt also.
Neoclassical works such as The Oath of the Horatti by Jacques Louis David and The Arcadian Shepherds by Nicholas Poussin which show how the ideal depictions of the Renaissance were taken up by later artists in order to tell a story. Self Portrait in a Straw Hat by Elizabeth Vigee Lebrun which show the virtuosity of women painters during this period.
The Sonebreakers by Gustave Courbet which perverts the language of academic art for the proletariat.
Cezanne’s The Grounds of the Chateau Noir which perverts academic teaching, disregards narrative and heralds a whole plethoria of avant-garde artists and methods.
Turner’s Rain, Steam and Speed as it attempts to depict a feeling rather than tell a story.
Hope this brief overview helps. Art is a very subjective subject so many paintings will be important to different people for various reason.
I’ve left 20th Century art for someone else to comment on!!
