Knee Sprain, slight ligament tear, shin pain?
I’m more delicate than tofu. I am practising Aikido (martial arts that includes rolls, slams, locks). I got injured from a slam and went to see a doctor and I took x-ray. She told me there’s no bone fracture. It’s a knee sprain and slight ligament tear, some people will heal within a few days to a week. It has been three weeks and it’s still painful when I press that area and when I bend my knee fully while standing. It’s the outer area of the knee bone that points to the side, I’m not sure if it’s called lateral collateral ligament. Also, the inner area of my shin is somehow slightly dented in, I don’t know if it’s the muscles. It’s painful when I press at the area. I injured it when I did an obstacle roll and bumped into someone in the way accidentally. Anyway, no medication was given by the doctor. She offered painkillers but I rejected. And she told me to let it heal on its own, there’s no need for rubbing. Anyone knows what could be wrong and how can I improve it?
You are right, the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) is on the outside of the knee. Ligament injuries can take anywhere from 2 weeks to several months to feel “normal” again. A ligament sprain means the ligament has been stretched or slightly torn. The problem is that ligaments do not return to their original formation and remain in that stretched position. Scar tissue is layed down to help regain strength. Some general strengthening of the muscles that surround the knee can help support the injured ligament. Refer to the link below for more info. As for the pain in the inside of the shin, from what you describe, it sounds to be a bruise if that is where you were hit when you bumped into the person. If this is true, it will most likely resolve on it’s own with some ice for pain and actively using the muscles around the area (quads, shins, and calves) as this helps encourage reabsorption of the swelling, if any. You can do this by moving the ankle in circles and flexing and extending the knee. By all means, if things don’t feel right, consult a physician. No one on the internet can ACCURATELY diagnose and treat your condition as we cannot see it or evaluate the area. Good luck.
