Copper Artistic Wire
Is it safe for me to make a pond cover from copper wire, or will it eventually poison my fish?
I have a large pond which when finished will be stunning.
As a temporary measure I have used netting to cover it, but it looks awful.
We are half a mile from a Heronry on a nature reserve, so have to cover the pond as I have fish (only ordinary, not Koi, but I know them all by sight, and am rather fond of them!) Also need to keep my dogs and cats out of it!!
I have decided to be artistic and make a feature of covering it rather than an eyesore. I don’t just want metal mesh or netting.
I have some copper wire available, but I am concerned about the possibility of poisoning my fish… Does anyone know if this is likely to be a problem please?
Yes, copper is definitely toxic to fish and most other aquatic life, and copper oxide is water-soluble, so I’d say if you have a copper-wire cover on your pond, you will definitely have pollution problems somewhere down the line.
Galvanized steel mesh (around here we call it poulty netting or chicken wire) is a pretty reliable barrier to most predators like herons. (It won’t keep out snakes or frogs, though). However, it’s not the most aesthetically pleasing thing you could put on a pond.
Could you make a steel, instead of copper, artistic feature?
You might also consider one of those bird-scaring gadgets that has an electric eye and shoots jets of water at anything that lands on the pond. This should also keep cats out. Dogs might enjoy it, though.
