copyright of newspaper clippings in collage art?
I am working on a collage in which I am using newspaper clippings as a base. Now the subject of my art has nothing to do with the clippings, but they just give my work a visual character.
My question is who owns the copyright of that piece of newspaper that I have clipped which will show through my finished work. I know it is done by many artists, but I don’t know how they handle the copyright issues.
You could get around any concerns by making your own newspaper clippings – on any simple word processing program – even word. Then print it on coloured paper. 2nd advantage: It would last longer than newsprint.
I make this suggestion because the world is so litigation crazy. Yes, some newspaper may sue you someday, but who would recognize a part of a column and how would they know which paper it came from?
But you COULD be sued by a news service that provides reports to newspapers. Why not mock up your own and not worry about it?
(and that way your “clippings” could say anything you want.)
