My dad won’t move the knives?

Ok I am manically depressed and bipolar and its really dangerous to have sharp objects around because when I get really depressed I tend to cut or even attempt suicide. It would be much better if there weren’t any objects lying around, and I told my dad but he says i can just control it and he won’t move the set of knives that’s on the kitchen bench, how can I persuade him? Also he has some antigue dagger things displayed on the wall in the study and he collects them as they are worth a lot but to me they are more than works of art. What can I do?

I hope you are in a doctor’s care and taking your medication, first of all. That should keep most of the nasties at bay. If you have a problem with having sharp objects around in general, you may also suffer a bit of OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder). Speak to your doctor about the problem. Next, you might want to have your doctor speak to your father if your doctor feels it’s a serious and immediate problem.

Otherwise, it’s mostly up to you to control your compulsion, simply because if you really want something sharp, you’re going to find something sharp. Having all the household cutlery locked up is not a viable solution. If it’s just a matter of “out of sight, out of mind” hopefully you’ll be able to come to some accommodation with your father with the help of your therapist.

It sounds like your dad may not understand some facets of your illness – like poor impulse control. Too many people still believe that the cure for any and all mental illness is “pulling yourself together.” Try to get him educated about your particular illness and how the mood swings can affect your behavior.
