What are good alternatives to graphic design?

So i’ve been wanting to go into graphic design for about 6 years now, ever since i started doing that type of stuff. Im about to go into my second year of college, and I may be in a predicament. I took some art and design classes my first year, but all the next classes are restricted to Bachelor of Design/Fine Arts students, of which I was rejected to when i applied. I go to the university of alberta, and they have no other art courses for people who ARENT in said programs. I LOVE art (primarily graphic design), movies, music, and all forms of entertainment. I had to request to register for certain art classes, so i may not get them. So, upon NOT getting into them, i have to think of what i can do in the meantime, or even a different career. What are some ideas of good careers related to graphic design or my hobbies?

Oddly enough, you may find your talents/interests useful in computer science. There is a whole area called interface design, in which one tries to design a computer program or web page so that it is a) visually appealing and b) easy to use. This is not as easy as it sounds.

Industrial design would be another area. Again, the problem there is to make things that are esthetically appealing and also easy to use, or at least relatively intuitive.

There’s an area of psychology called human factors research. The emphasis in this research is making things useable and safe to use.

A very good writer who covers all of the above is Donald A. Norman. A quick perusal of the Edmonton Public Library catalogue reveals the following books by him:

Emotional design: why we love (or hate) everyday things.

The psychology of everyday things.

Turn signals are the facial expressions of automobiles.

Check out the following web sites as well:

There’s a role out there for someone with an interest in design from an esthetic point of view who can also create designs that are useable by ordinary human beings. This is a fascinating area, and it’s interdisciplinary. Read one of Donald A. Norman’s books and take the time to read through the web sites above.

Hope this gives you an idea.
