What was Atlas holding on his shoulders?
I’ve always thought it must be the Earth, that’s shown in modern art, but I don’t know about ancient sculptures. If it’s Earth then they must have believed Earth to be a sphere
Earth and Sky.
The story of atlas being condemned to carry the earth and sky on his shoulders is ancient, but the drawings and sculptures of him holding a globe on his shoulders didnot appear until the 16th century.
However, what he is carrying is not intended to be the earth, but rather the universe (earth and sky). This still conforms to the ancent notion of the earth being flat.
